Top Toys 2013 – New Construction Toys

Top Toys of 2013: Lego Friends

It seems like Christmas was just yesterday. However, toy makers are already thinking about the top toys of 2013. We headed out to the Toy Fair to bring you all the construction toys that could be must haves later this year. See the top toys 2013 here. One company that always has a great display at the Toy Fair is Lego. This year was no different. Lego showed off all of the coolest toys in all of their lines.

For kids just getting familiar with Lego building blocks there is the Duplo line. These sets have larger chunky blocks with simple designs. These sets are designed to appeal to toddlers and preschoolers.  The chunky blocks fit perfect in their hands.  From colorful trains to licensed toys based on Disney movies, the Duplo line has something for just every young child.

Last year, Lego introduced the Lego Friends line for girls. Girls fell in love with Heartlake City and inhabitants. This year Lego is introducing new sets in the line including a Soccer practice set.

One of the most popular sets in the Lego City line is the fire station set. This year we are getting a new fire station set. It has everything that your little budding firefighter will need to rescue people in trouble. Use the fire engine, van, and helicopter to put out fires. The Lego City line would not be complete without a new police themed line. Lock the bad guys in jail forever. Kids can chase the bad guys on foot or use the Police ATV to speed along.

The heroes in a half shell are coming to the world of Lego. Last year, the Turtles brand was relaunched with a new cartoon on Nickleodeon. The line features everything from smaller sets to large sets. Lego has even acquired the license for the new Disney The Lone Ranger movie.

For older kids, there is the new Lego Mindstorms. These buildable robots allow kids to control their creations using an app. Kids can learn the basics of programming and don’t even need a computer to program the robots.
It was hard to leave the Lego area given their strong lineup of construction toys this year. Though Lego has a substantial share of the market, in 2013 it’s not just Lego coming out with great construction toys for kids.

Playmobil has a great lineup of toys in almost every price range. One of our favorite new sets was the Police Headquarters. This is one of the bigger sets. There are so many things that you can do with this cool set including a working alarm.

Mega Bloks has found great success with licensed blocks. Last year, they introduced their Skylanders Giants sets. This year they are bringing out new sets in the line and will later bring out sets based on the new Skylanders video game, Skylanders Swap Force. Capitalizing on Lego’s success with Lego Friends, Mego Bloks came out with its own line of construction toys for girls starring Barbie. For boys who love racecars, they will love the new Mega Bloks featuring hot wheel cars.
